Back by popular demand for its sixth year, Python Virtual Bootcamp, a set of free online programming workshops for those with little or no experience with the platform, kicks off June 23, 2026.
Led by UM-IHC faculty member Pratyush Tiwary—a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Maryland who heads UM-IHC’s therapeutic drug discovery research center—the course immerses students in artificial intelligence (AI) plus basic and “not-so-basic” programming and coding techniques.
Python is a versatile, high-level programming language known for its simple, English-like syntax and readability. The workshop, supported in part by the National Science Foundation, will adhere closely to last year’s material and is scheduled on Mondays and Tuesdays as follows:
June 23 and 24, 4-6 p.m.: Python Basics
June 29 and 30: 4-6 p.m.: AI/PyTorch Basics
July 27 and 28, 4-6 p.m.: AI/PyTorch Not-so-basics
August 22, 4-6 p.m.: Vibe Coding /Codex
Over the last five summers, Python Virtual Bootcamp has drawn more than 800 participants, including undergraduate and graduate students, teachers and others from UMD, Montgomery College, Prince George’s County Community College, Towson University, the FDA and more. Some participants have little to no experience in programming and/or advanced mathematics.
“Each year for this popular series, we adapt to the changing landscape of what it means to be a good programmer,” Tiwary said. “But as always, the program is free and is taught by a cohort of passionate volunteer teachers from universities, national labs and industry who love sharing their programming expertise.”
Students need a laptop (not a tablet, iPad or phone) and a stable internet connection to participate. Prior experience with Python or other programming platforms is not required. Course videos will be accessible online for those who miss a session.
