July 26-31, 2026 | Still taking applicants!
The University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC) will host a four-day summer camp July 27-31, 2026, in North Bethesda, Maryland, for high school students to explore ideas and engage in experimentation in machine learning, mathematical epidemiology, ecology and oncology. Camp runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
Led by Abba Gumel, a UM-IHC faculty member and Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics at the University of Maryland, the MATHBIO summer camp will host 18-24 high school students from Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties in 2026.
“Many students enjoy mathematics, but they do not always see how powerful it can be in solving real-world problems, particularly pertaining to infectious diseases, evolution and control of cancer in patients, ecological systems, and the role of data and machine learning in human health,” said Gumel, who also holds the Michael and Eugenia Brin Endowed Chair in Mathematics at UMD. “I look forward to giving these talented high school students early and meaningful exposure to mathematical research that connects directly to real-world problems.”
When not running MATHBIO, Gumel uses modeling, data analytics and computation to study the dynamics and control of emerging and reemerging diseases. His work contributes to the design of effective public health policy for controlling those diseases.
A few spots are still available for MATHBIO! For more information, contact Abba Gumel at agumel@umd.edu.
